The thing you do not want is a Web browser calling a Java plug-in. But I wouldn't worry about Java on your machine. I don't really understand what you are trying to do, sorry. One would think that the LO download / install would do this for me so I would not end up with this problem. Seems like the problem has something to do with having a JAVA runtime installed.
Google searches indicate many others had this problem too. With LO Writer, the Mail Merge Wizard hangs up when trying to select the data file. I was trying to use a simple CSV file as my data source. Upon the recommendations by a few DPR members in this thread below, I decided to try LibreOffice (latest version 5.1.0.3) to do an E mail merge.
